Letters to a young astrologer

By Kramer Wetzel on May 13, 2013

This entry reminded me of myself, as I was a (self-styled) “Mac Consultant” for some time. Gradually, that’s shifted into full-time “nothing but net” astrofish.net astrology.

I like it just fine, and I like keeping up with technical issues, as it’s the easiest way to deal with some of the material.

The “letters” series, part of what a daily web journal is about, is a good way to keep track of where I’ve been.

All I can ever hope, be better at my craft.

As always, I’m just looking for more clues, more pieces to the puzzle.

Letters to a young astrologer

There are bits I’ve discovered along the way that have been quite helpful, but this is oftentimes more about writing and less about astrology. I met R. Sleigh (Sagittarius) some years ago. I don’t play the harmonica. I don’t plan to play the harmonica. I will probably never buy any of his harmonica kits, pieces, tune-ups, or lessons. As a note, though, as “letters to a young astrologer,” — the business doesn’t matter — the process is valid and transcends; R. Sleigh’s writing about harmonica playing is quite valid.

    For example.

I am still not a painter.

Letters to a young astrologer

Richard does run a mailing list on his site, and while it is targeted at harmonica players, any creative should be reading the musings as there’s that Sagittarius humor mixed with an honest Capricorn self-deprecating humor, balanced by age. As a note to astrologers — and writers — an outside source is always good form of inspiration. Something that doesn’t do anything with what you do.

The problem being, playing the harmonica, writing horoscopes, and being an astrologer? It is the same energy.

There’s more to astrology readings than rote recitation of planet placements and meanings.

Miscellany via Bexar County

By Kramer Wetzel on May 12, 2013

San Antonio — as defined as Bexar County — is way weirder than Austin, but no one listens to me.

Rosario’s is a famous TexMex place on S. Alamo. Across the street, last week? I grabbed this image and, to me, it looks like a “tobacco inhalation device,” as we’re not allowed to say “bong.”

Earlier, there was this image, proof that the iPhone is not always the best camera, as it was one of those achingly clear spring days. I noticed the figure of the predator’s shape, gliding overhead, riding the gentle breezes, and he (she?) did pass close enough to clearly see the details of the bird’s markings, but the attempt at a picture failed on so many levels.

That’s okay, made me think back to my connection with owls more than hawks.

No amount of digital chicanery could tease out what clearly was no longer visible.

    Gated Living

By Kramer Wetzel on May 11, 2013

Had a buddy, back in the old Austin days, living in a “Gated Community.” Some details have echoed in my horoscopes.

Which is what made this odd image even more amusing, word play in the title, and then, a slight sag to the image’s frame, hardware, software, who knows? I didn’t do it.

    Gated Living.

    Omnia Explorate, Meliore Retinete
    BCL

“You know, that place up the street? The antique store with apartments? It used to be a brothel; they would drive the cattle to the stockyards, now the other side of the freeway, and the girls would line up on the balcony for the cowboys.”

I can’t even make this stuff up.

    iPhone App:
I’m guessing maybe 40% of you have iPhones. If you do? Now at Starbucks for free, there’s an app called “Clear.”

It’s a “To Do” list thing. App. Whatever.

It’s cool. From Starbucks, for free, for a limited time.

Simple. Does one thing, a “punch list,” or grocery list, and that’s all.

      Tacos y mas

By Kramer Wetzel on May 10, 2013

      Tacos y mas
      Tacos y mas

      History in the Making:
Another branch of the acequia uncovered. Colonial Spain, taming the land. Of note.

And one from Oklahoma, albeit, not quite as old.

      Love this comparison:
The minimal mac version, and a previous version, I did, here and here. Compare and contrast.

I suspect it’s still buried in there someplace, as I was sure I had an image of an iPod, a camera, and pencil/paper, to show what the phone replaced. And phone, a real cell phone, like this one (in reflection).

      Brand, branding, and fan dedication

By Kramer Wetzel on May 9, 2013

      Brand, branding, and fan dedication:

It must be a marketer’s dream, to see this. A tattoo of a logo.

One of fredlet’s old Austin buddies, he had the best “geek” tat of all. He had a bar code for spam.

Right there, on his arm. That’s brand, branding, and fan dedication, all in one.

Thinking of that bit of ink, have to include my favorite Sagittarius rock star, and his arm piece, a heart and its scroll, “Her Name.”

“Next time, the thing to do?” he explained, rolling up his sleeve to show me the ink, “just leave it blank; that way, you can write any girl’s name in with a sharpie.”

If I mentioned the rock star by name? That’s brand, branding, and fan dedication, all in one.

      Web Start:

The home page. It’s a Mac App that lets a user define the items that the user wants on a startup screen.

Me? I use a web page for that. Machine independent.

Hint: works on phones, tablets, iPads, Kindle, netbooks, notebooks and desktop machines.

What I always liked about the web? “No app required.”

      Pricing and Price Points

By Kramer Wetzel on May 8, 2013

All about “Pricing and Price Points?”

      Still cheaper than a burrito?

      Yes.

      Pictures and Justice:
The snapshot from the from seat of a hybrid, headed south towards the beach, just doesn’t do it justice. The scene is 35 mph winds, tough weather blowing in, and the fields, prepared for summer crops, dust billowing in the air.

      Rain, we’ll take the rain.

        University Education

By Kramer Wetzel on May 7, 2013

        University Education

Check my CV, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, from ASU, Arizona State, Tempe, AZ. No regrets. In a recent TV version of the remake of “Hawaii Five-Oh,” the lead forensic coroner claimed ASU, not for academics, but for the parties, “They were off the hook!”

I studied, workshopped, under two greats that come to mind, Mark Harris and Ron Carlson. Less about what they taught about the mechanics, and much more about the process. Served me well. Although, the process and the mechanics are interwoven.

Over the years, the process is refined, and I’ll doubt that I’ll ever be a better writer, but I can constantly strive to improve the mechanics. Grammar, spelling, punctuating, style, content and delivery. Fewer run-ones, at least, unintentional ones.

When I mentioned ASU, people from one side of my life tap the side of their noses, nod, and smirk, usually with comment about, “It figures, you know, Kramer and all….” Other folks from the other side? “Kramer, well, sure, I guess…. I never knew.”

        astrofish.net/astrofish.net.pdf

My bad: that wasn’t the résumé I was looking for, just some web fodder.

        University Education

The University Education has little to do with lessons learned fishing. Be prepared. Adjust, modify, test. Adjust as need be to shifting weather.

I was supposed to fish with a boat load of buddies on Saturday, but they all bailed. So I fished almost solo on Sunday. Caught a Gafftop, couple of skipjack, a pair of rays, couple of tourist trout and small, black-tip shark. Nothing worth keeping.

Biggest Sting Ray was close to a square meter and gave the best fight, and, released, basically unharmed.

Fishing Guide to Fishing Guide, “Kramer, I cleaned the fish last time, you clean them this time.”

Too bad, nothing worth keeping on my turn. The recent weather left more than the fish confused.

All about process. One style or technique isn’t working? Try a different style, a different location.

Couple of the first catches of the day were Lady Fish, and those quickly turned into bait. Proved effective. Does a university education prepare us for fishing?

        No Fish

          Balcones Fault

By Kramer Wetzel on May 6, 2013

          Nota Bene: pronounced, Bal-koen-AYS Fault.

Balcones Fault. Runs through Austin. Name of the greatest (Austin) band, ever. House band at the old Dillo.

          Why China gets big earthquakes?

          Miscellaneous:
New movie version, Much Ado About Nothing and Austin in the new iPhone ad? I knew that view — from the spot between the SRV statue and the bat bridge.
